I'm a city kid, so it's a shock to my system (on many accounts) when I retreat to the mountains to visit some close friends of mine. Luckily the Barnard General Store is there whenever I need an excuse to emerge from my seclusion. This is the kind of place where the employees greet the local customers by name, and know just how to help them. I'm just a stranger in their town, yet everyone's always been super nice to me. Their deli is great, as is the ice cream bar. There are just 3 or so short isles with food and other general groceries, yet somehow I always manage to find everything I'm looking for. I even spied two remaining 6-hour blank VHS tapes for sale behind the counter... get 'em before they're gone!

Great local General Store! fantastic breakfasts and lunch specials. Service is attentive and friendly. The Homemade Corned Beef Hash is amazing, excellent pancakes, Fiesta eggs, and delicious seedy whole grain toast. great sandwiches and potted roast beef (only had it as a special) is the best I have had anywhere. It is located right on beatiful Silver Lake which has swimming, camping, etc. Lots of snowmobilers stop in the winter as it has gas. Table seating, order from the women behind the counter or sit on the ice cream bar stools and get a milkshake. Can't say enough about this place. Its about a 15 minute drive from Suicide Six away from Woodstock on Rt 12. Prob 20 min from Woodstock

I am lucky enough to have family to visit in Vermont. My boyfriend's dad lives in Woodstock and the first time I visited was when I realized that I wanted to spend a lot more time here. One of the places I must go to every time I visit is the Barnard General Store. It is one of the longest running general stores in Vermont and has delicious goodies and warm service to offer during all four seasons. Situated right next to Silver Lake it is the perfect place to grab a sandwich or a delicious ice cream cone in the summer and go catch some rays by the water. When we visited this past Christmas, I enjoyed a delicious bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup and was blown away by its simplicity and goodness.

The thing that keeps me coming back time after time is by far the breakfasts, specifically the blueberry pancakes. Large fluffy cakes with the perfect blueberry to dough ratio and topped with 100% Vermont Maple syrup--it just doesn't get any better than that. The next time you are in Barnard or a neighboring town, be sure to stop by and grab a delicious Vermont treat. It's like walking into your mother's house and being taken care of until the moment you walk out.
